Ashland County School Leaders Meet with Ohio Lawmakers at Hillsdale to Advocate for School Funding
JEROMESVILLE, Ohio — Hillsdale Local Schools hosted superintendents and treasurers from across Ashland County May 5 for a conversation with Senator Mark Romanchuk (R, District 22) and Representative Melanie Miller (R, District 67), advocating for fair and sustainable funding for Ohio’s public schools.
The discussion focused on the necessity of consistent investment by the state and its shared responsibility to support local public schools.
“Our schools can’t do this alone,” Hillsdale Superintendent Dr. Cathy Trevathan said. “We’re calling on our lawmakers to take bold, transparent steps toward meaningful funding reform that serves all Ohio students.”
District leaders pointed to the Ohio Constitution, which guarantees a “thorough and efficient system of common schools throughout the state” (Article VI, Section 2). They also noted that the Ohio Supreme Court has ruled multiple times that the state’s school funding system must be both adequate and equitable, principles they believe must guide future funding decisions.
“Ohio’s Constitution outlines a responsibility to provide a strong public school system for every student,” said Superintendent Trevathan. “At Hillsdale, that means creating a safe, challenging environment where our students can grow, lead, and succeed. We need state support that matches that commitment.”
During the roundtable, district officials shared their concerns about the impact of current funding models and called on lawmakers to prioritize long-term solutions.
Additionally, school administrators noted that voucher schools are not held to the same standards required of public schools, and should be if they receive taxpayer dollars.
“These conversations are essential,” Dr. Trevathan said. “As district leaders, we’re committed to advocating for the resources our students need and deserve.”
Hillsdale Local Schools remain dedicated to working with legislators and local partners to protect and strengthen public education in Ohio.
